Being prepared is the best line of defense when fighting the flu. Part of being prepared is being aware of the common places where you can come into contact with the flu virus. Places like work keyboards, schools, and playgrounds come top of mind, but it is always good to know other ways we can contract the flu virus. Highlighthealth.com has a list of the top 10 places cold and flu germs hide on its blog:

  1. Handshakes, sneezes, and kissing
  2. Kitchen sink sponges and dishcloths
  3. Restrooms and toilet seats
  4. Doorknobs
  5. Drinking fountains
  6. Shopping carts
  7. Elevator buttons and escalator handrails
  8. Office workspaces
  9. Gas station pump handles and keypads
  10. Airplanes, subways, and buses

There are three key take away points from this list: 1) If you come in contact with something, so do other people…so it probably has germs, 2) keep your hands clean, and 3) get vaccinated- it’s the best protection against influenza. With flu season just around the corner it is important to stay alert and be conscious of these common, everyday places that can house flu germs.
